Sandra Alland
Sandra Alland is a Scottish-Canadian writer, filmmaker and interdisciplinary artist based in Scotland.
Her first full collection of poetry, titled Proof of a Tongue, was published in 2004.
Since then, she has published several further collections of poetry and fiction including Naturally Speaking (Espresso), which won Canada’s 2013 bpNichol Award. She is featured on Queen Mary University of London’s Archive of the Now, and her writing has appeared in Comma, Gutter, Chroma, subTerrain and This Magazine.
Alland is co-editor of an anthology of UK disabled and deaf poets (Stairs and Whispers: D/deaf & disabled poets write back, Nine Arches Press, 2017) and the editor of Some Poems By People I Like, 2007. With Ania Urbanowska she made four short film-poems, three featuring British Sign Language, in 2017-18 and this was also the focus of her Glasgow International performance, Audience, 2021.
Alland has performed widely throughout the UK and internationally, including at Edinburgh International Book Festival (Words Per Minute), Ottawa International Book Festival, Jawdance (Apples & Snakes), and Aye Write! Festival. She collaborates with the poetry-music-film ensemble, They They Theys.
Their second chapbook, Anything Not Measurable Is Not Real, was published by Proper Tales Press in 2019. Alland was awarded a Digital Originals grant from Canada Council for the Arts in 2020 to develop it into an audiobook and film-stories.
