We commissioned Julie McNeill, poet and author of ‘Mission Dyslexia: Find Your Superpower and Be Your Brilliant Self’, to produce poetry lesson plans for Scottish secondary school year groups S1 to S3. These plans are available to download below in the form of PowerPoint presentations with accompanying notes.
In the planning phase of the project, Poetry Unwrapped, Julie set up an advisory group that included Cathy Magee, the chief executive of Dyslexia Scotland. As part of the process Julie recorded a podcast with poets Victoria McNulty, Beth McDonough and Craig Houston, who bring an insight or unique perspective on neurodiversity. Some of their poems are included in the lesson plans.
The resources were piloted in schools in Glasgow, Falkirk and Perth. Julie works in High Schools across Scotland on Additional Support for Learning.
