Etching the shape of silence

Black and white etching of seagulls flying

On 10 July 2026, the poetry library partnered with Edinburgh Printmakers to showcase new poems and prints by a selection of Scotland’s Young Makars, who were responding to the David Burnett Collection of wood engravings. The activity was curated by Ria Brontë with the support of staff at Edinburgh Printmakers, including Meg Dolan, Collections Development Manager. The engraving print workshop was delivered by Namhara Byron Low.

Edinburgh Printmakers cares for the personal collection of wood engravings collected by artist poet David Burnett (1937-2023). Burnett collected over 2,500 prints with a specific interest in wood engraving technique from all over the world. Burnett had kindly donated a substantial number of books from his private collection to the poetry library shortly before his passing.
