They have come
/ to scald our blood, to call us out
/ from our bright houses to the twisted shadows under trees.

I was definitely typed, doomed
to be an exponent of evil
The witches knew the truth – / smelling my wickedness / with huge hooked noses.
The sin is that I wasn’t a stone
/ And the troubles of the world make me…
A hunner funnels bleezin’, reekin’,
/ Coal an’ ironstane, charrin’, smeekin’;
/ Navvies, miners, keepers, fillers,
/ Puddlers, rollers, iron millers;
/ Reestit, reekit,…
