The moon shone down on the jungle.
/ Night Monkey climbed up the tree.
/ She clambered and leapt to where Day Monkey slept,
/ And…
So hushed, so hot, the broad Zambesi lies
/ Above the Falls, and on her weedy isles
/ Swing antic monkeys swarm malignant…
I am waiting for you.
/ I have been travelling all morning through the bush
/ and not eaten.
/ I am lying at the edge…

/ in

/ forest
/ and

/ leopards
/ come
/ to
/ town.

Bushwoman stands here
/ Night hangs over her
/ Stars stab it
/
/ Hunter-stars
/ that rip night
/ take his heart

When you’ve lived a while within the sound
/ of surf and mosquitos and swirls of children
