Tanya Shirley

Jamaican poet Tanya Shirley’s debut collection, She Who Sleeps With Bones (Peepal Tree Press, 2009), was named by the Jamaica Gleaner as one of the year’s best. Her work is published in several journals and anthologies, including New Caribbean Poetry (Carcanet Press) and Jubilation (Peepal Tree Press). She is a performer with a background in oratory, drama and dance. She currently teaches in the Department of Literatures in English, UWI, Mona, Jamaica, where she is also a PhD Candidate. Her second poetry collection will be published early 2014 by Peepal Tree Press in the U.K. Tanya Shirley is one of the poets taking part in the SPL's Commonwealth Poets United project.

Jamaica's Tanya Shirley is a participant in the SPL's Commonwealth Poets United project. She visited the Scottish Poetry Library to read poems about her gun-toting grandfather and the facets of Jamaican life revealed by her work.
