Stuart B. Campbell originates from the central-belt town of Larkhall, Lanarkshire. On leaving school, he worked as a library assistant and then was employed in a variety of other jobs (survey assistant, labourer, PA engineer and in the ‘Barras’ in Glasgow, inter alia). He lived in Aberdeenshire from 1980, when he attended Robert Gordon’s University, graduating in Social Work, and thereafter worked as Children’s Services Manager with Aberdeenshire Council. He has a longstanding interest in traditional music and song and plays a range of instruments, being a founder member of one of the Northeast’s much sought after ceilidh bands. As a mountaineer, rock climber and Nordic skier, he has climbed all over Scotland, made many first ascents, has completed climbs in the Alps and has been on expedition to the Himalayas.
Campbell’s poetry is collected in three books and two pamphlets. He edited Things Not Seen: an anthology of contemporary Scottish mountain poetry in 1999, and contributed reviews for the magazine Northwords Now. He was commissioned to write the poetry for the book The Great Mountain Crags of Scotland and for the award-winning film, Distilled. He lives in the small fishing village of Portsoy on the Moray coast.
