Julie McNeill
Julie is a poet, editor and community worker who has made Glasgow her home, after travelling north from Carlisle in 1998. She has a Masters in Creative Writing from the Open University.
In 2021 she was runner up in the Glasgow Women’s Library Bold Types competition and in 2023 won the Burrell Collection Hidden Gems Poetry competition.
Her first pamphlet Ragged Rainbows was published in 2021 through HybridDreich. In that same year she co-wrote the prize winning Mission Dyslexia, a non-fiction book for neurodivergent children and young people. In 2023 her first collection Something Small was published by Drunk Muse Press.
Her themed collection We are Scottish Football, is to be published by Luath Press in 2024. She has also co-edited a book on women’s football for Tippermuir Press due out the same year. She is currently writing a poetry collection themed around the stories of the Paisley Mill workers.
A football fan, and a passionate advocate for women in sport, Julie is the Poet-in-residence for St Mirren FC charitable trust and Makar of the Hampden Collection.
She performs her work widely and was commissioned by the Scottish Poetry Library to design Poetry Unwrapped a suite of workshops and resources for inspiring young neurodivergent writers. She wrote ‘We are Scottish Football’ a film poem for BBC Sport to celebrate the start of the football season 2022/23.
She is an active member of Strathkelvin Writers’ Group in Bishopbriggs and since 2024 she has been part of the editorial team for Drunk Muse Press.
