Em Strang works as a Creative Writing and Creative Reading tutor at Dumfries prison and is poetry editor for the Dark Mountain Project. She completed a PhD in Creative Writing (ecological poetry) at the University of Glasgow in 2013, and was a recipient of a Scottish Book Trust New Writer Award the following year. Her work has been published widely in anthologies and journals, commended in the 2013 Wigtown and McLellan poetry competitions, shortlisted for the 2014 Bridport Prize and selected for the Forward Anthology in 2016.
Her illustrated pamphlet, Stone, a collaboration with artist Mat Osmond, was published by Atlantic Press in March 2016, with all proceeds going to Scottish charity, Trees for Life. Bird-Woman (Shearsman, 2016) is her first full collection. In 2017, Bird-Woman was the winner of the Saltire Award for the Best Scottish Poetry Book of the Year as well as shortlisted for the Seamus Heaney Poetry Centre's Prize for the Best First Collection.
