Bob Orr was born in Hamilton, New Zealand, and brought up on farms in the Waikato. He has been writing poems since he was 12, when he found 'that words and their arrangement, actual and possible, were a game unlike any other.' He is a poet of the 'Big Smoke' generation and was one of those most centrally associated with the 1970s radical magazine Freed/The Word is Freed and with The Young New Zealand Poets. He publishes infrequently and has worked for more than twenty years on Auckland's Waitemata Harbour. His collections include Valparaiso (AUP, 2002) and Calypso (AUP, 2008).
