Òran na Cille

Marcas Mac an Tuairneir
Mark Spencer Turner

Oir ’s a’ ghrian, a chì sinn ag èirigh gach là,
a dh’èireas a-rèir A dh’àithne.

– Naomh Pàdraig

Coisich còmhla rium,
cas-rùisgte thar feamainn
is clachan na tràghad,
gu comraich a’ chladaich.

Coisich còmhla rium,
a dh’ionnsaigh an fhearainn,
is beannachd nad bhràghad
làn an dàin is an Dòmhnaich.

Cuir fàilt’ air ciùin’ an dorais,
barra-chaol chun a’ chorra.
Seachain manadh an donais,
eadar ballachan mo chille.

Cuir cùl air cron na cruinne,
corra uair rèir na tìde:
dèan ann faire na grèine,
’s i air laighe chun an iar.

Coisich còmhla rium,
thar cabhsair ar cinnidh
is claisean gach ceuma,
cuirt’ ann leis gach creideas.

Coisich còmhla rium,
o àgh Phort na h-Innse,
gu suaimhneas na cille,
làn caoimhneas na caime.

Translations of this Poem

Cellsong

For that sun, which we see rising every day,

rises at His command.

– St. Patrick

Walk with me,

barefoot across seaweed

and stones of the strand,

to the sanctuary of the shore.

Walk with me,

out, towards the land,

with a blessing in chest

of destiny and Sabbath.

Welcome silence at the door,

tapered to the apex,

avoid all ill omens,

between the walls of my cell.

Turn your back on worldly wrongs,

once in a while, if you’ve time:

keep a vigil to the sun

as it sets in the west.

Walk with me across

our kindred’s causeway,

with the furrow of each step

set down in good faith.

Walk with me,

from Peel’s providence

to the repose of the cell,

the urbane sanctuary.
