Oor Constellation o Candy

Ben Mann

Black and white head-shot of Ben Mann in nature. He has black hair and eyes and wears a grey sweatshirt.

The moon, perched, a pockmarked pan drop.
Nae! A scoop ah Mackie’s, lathered
In a simple syrup broch
Sowfing wi the yawning pitch-
Black of yer pint-sized Dr. Pepper.

A cosmic ice cream float:
Crooning primordial spume
Oot yon pinpricked void
Ah liquorice-tarred and
Treacled sea

Stardust:
Scattered crumbs
Coalescing
On the burnt,
Vantablack, baking tray
O the universe

Against which aizle sits
Oor effervescent Irn Bru bon bon
Oor popping candy fusion core
Bolting celestial champagne
And pishin oot sleekit-
Photon-froth

The nucleus:
Wheechin us rooned
This solar carousel

Hingin on fer dear life,
Teh a candy necklace
– Plum line pulled taut –
Atween the teeth o a toddler.

Wheen crushed Sherbert Lemons
And murled tablet halos
Hula-hooping gas giants.

Rhubarb & Custard comets
Rainbow Drops, pearl sugar
And soor apple asteroids.

Rice paper planets
Flying Saucers
And honey filled magnetospheres

The dusted doughnut of the Kuiper Belt
The gobstopper rind o the Oort Cloud

On and on, the galactic candy cane twizzles.

Til the syrupy sunrise
And celestial bodies sigh,
Cooing fer the next bairn
To savour the sweetness o the stars.
