from A hyakuin renga in summer

Alec Finlay

shrivelled little figs
that never made it
to the table

swirling a late cup of milky tea
what she’d like is sunshine

wedding day breakfast
coffee with whisky
then whisky

eggs over easy
on rye

like sprinkled pepper
these moles on your back
or stars

David Connearn, Gerrie Fellows, Colin Will, Peter Manson, Alec Finlay

About this poem

Hyakuin Renga in Summer National Poetry Day postcard 2004

This poem was reproduced on a postcard for National Poetry Day 2004. Eight poetry postcards are published each year by the Scottish Poetry Library to celebrate National Poetry Day and are distributed throughout Scotland to schools, libraries and other venues. The theme for 2004 was food. You can find out more about National Poetry Day in our National Poetry Day pages, where you’ll also find resources to go with the poems.
