The going

‘The going is harder’
he advised me
‘as one gets older.’
I didn’t believe him.
After all, he was old
and the old are like that.

Now I find it easier
if only to believe him.
Much easier. And the going
not downhill, as advertised.
No descent beckons.
One doesn’t get ‘past it’.
The real climb
comes toward the end.
