Freak Phenomena

Jane McKie

Siphoned from their beds,
periwinkles crack open
on Beijing pavements;

storm-addled tadpoles
carpet downtown Kolkata;
red ants rain on Bonn.

Loose tongues spread the news:
the Second Coming, world’s end!
But what harbingers —

tiny, untarnished.
