Cree Seasons

Liz Niven

autumn cree

leaves kaleidoscope
amber, gold, russet, orange
amadou fungus mushrooms
migratory geese cry
berries, nuts squirrel into banks
autumn mists ghost in

winter cree

words hibernate in cool air
branches high-wind snap
frozen foliage tinkles
sugar icing frosts banks
chest-puffed robins carol
peace penetrates happed hearts

spring cree

Galloway greens again
the river silvered with
white eggs, sharp scent of cucumber
sweet vernal grass
vanillas air
hope buds like catkins

summer cree

river traffic buzzes
mayfly, dragonfly, dipper
ripple-arc surfaces
swallows water-pattern weave
Japanese Knotweed
kimonos the earth
