On the bill for a summer evening of verse: Mary Robinson launching Alphabet Poems and Vicki Husband with Sykkel Saga, both published by Mariscat.
Alphabet Poems consists of 26 poems, one for each letter of the English alphabet. The starting point for each poem is the shape of the capital letter. ‘Sometimes,’ says Mary Robinson, ‘I go back to an earlier hieroglyph and its signification, sometimes I use my imagination.’ The result is a wonderfully inventive sequence, casting new light on old forms.
Sykkel Saga is a long poem about a bicycle trip through the Arctic Circle in northern Norway. It is a journey through landscape, Norse mythology and the Norwegian language, exploring what draws us to a place, of distance and proximity in time and space, and of connections. Stewart Conn comments: ‘Its strength lies in the precision of the language and its detailed observations, the nuanced depiction of the mode of transport and the alert and thoughtful responses to what is encountered en route, all of which have a persuasive freshness and flavour.’
