The launch of the French version of short story collection Ath-Aithne by Martin MacIntyre, first published in 2003, the first time that a work of Scottish Gaelic fiction has been translated into French.
Un passe-temps pour l’été was published in Oct 2018 by Vents d’ ailleurs, a company led by Jutta Hepke. The book comprises translations of 16 of the original 18 short stories which appeared in Ath-Aithne (Reacquaintance) published by CLAR in 2003, fourteen of these were in Gaelic and four in English. The stories were translated by Scadi Kaiser.
Ath-Aithne, the first of new series of Gaelic fiction, Ur-Sgeul, was launched at The Edinburgh International Book Festival in 2003 and won The Saltire Society First Book of The Year Award that same year. John Storey, Head of Development at The Gaelic Books Council directed the Ur-Sgeul initiative which has seen the publication of some 50 works of new fiction in Gaelic in the last fifteen years.
The launch-event will be chaired by Marion Sinclair, Chief Executive of Publishing Scotland and will be accessible to all with French, Gaelic or English. Both the new book in French and the original book in Gaelic will be for sale on the night.
