Alan Spence will read new poems from his first year as Edinburgh Makar – commissioned pieces and spontaneous responses, eulogies and celebrations and the occasional rant, haiku and tanka, sonnets and incantations. With stories of how the work came about, this promises to be a memorable and entertaining evening.
Spence is an award-winning poet and playwright, novelist and short story writer. He is Professor Emeritus in Creative Writing at the University of Aberdeen where he founded the WORD Festival and ran it for 12 years. He was appointed Edinburgh Makar in 2017 and in 2018 he was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun from the government of Japan. With his wife he runs the Sri Chinmoy Meditation Centre in Edinburgh. His most recent books are the novel Night Boat, playscript No Nothing, and poetry collection Morning Glory.
