Every August, the Scottish Poetry Library hosts The Balcony Readings: events at which anyone can turn up and read under the guidance of members of the School of Poets. The events are free, non-ticketed and relaxed affairs. No experience necessary.
Friday 19th August 2-3 pm
Including themes of “Landscape and Climate”
Wednesday 24th August 2-3 pm
Including themes of “Animals and Humanity, from Forest to Festival”
Both sessions will end with lighter/funny poems (open theme).
Please note that open mic poets should arrive 15-20 mins early.
The event will take place on the SPL balcony (if dry) or on the mezzanine (if raining).
About the School of Poets
The School of Poets meets monthly to share new poems – reading and having read – and to receive considered and supportive feedback. The group was started by Tessa Ransford at the outset of the Scottish Poetry Library and has been a home to aspiring poets ever since.
The School of Poets usually meets physically in the Scottish Poetry Library. However, since lockdown, we meet in hybrid sessions with poems shared by email beforehand.
Want to join?
The group meets on the evening of every second Tuesday in each month from 6 to 8pm. Normally we don’t meet in August and December. Open to poets of all levels, please contact Sue McKendrick (firstname.lastname@example.org) for more information.
We welcome new members and suggest donations of £12 pa (£6 pa unwaged) or £2 drop in.
