The SPL invites expressions of interest for this year’s cohort of our Poetry Ambassadors programme. The Ambassadors will manage a selection of new commissions on the theme of Sir Walter Scott‘s 250th celebrations. Ambassadors will also support initiatives such as our award for Outstanding Contribution to Poetry in Scotland. We will encourage Ambassadors to bring forward their own suggestions for local showcase events, and opportunities for further audience engagement and writers’ development.
There are two places available. Ambassadors have been chosen for writing in Scots and Scottish Gaelic. These Ambassadors are Sheena Blackhall and Martin MacIntyre. To support our national reach, we would particularly welcome applications from people who live outwith Edinburgh and Glasgow.
One element of the commission process may involve the provision of editing support to writers on the form and content of submitted work. Ambassadors will also have the opportunity to lead social media “take-over” days. Experience in the provision of constructive feedback to poets, as well as familiarity with the use of digital platforms to engage audiences, would be therefore advantageous for applicants.
Our expectations of the role and the practical details of our working relationship will be outlined in our standard freelance agreement, which will include our rates and the payment schedule, along with reference to our code of conduct policy. This year’s programme will run from June 2021 to May 2022.
The deadline for submissions via email is Friday, 7 May. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an online conversation on either 12 May or 13 May.
To apply, please submit:
- An expression of interest letter, no more than 2-sides of A4 paper, highlighting your experience and skills as they might relate to the role.
- If available, please provide up to two links to your writing and any projects you have delivered or supported.
- The contact email of one referee, along with a line to say in what capacity they will provide a reference.
Please submit your interest to, email@example.com, with the subject heading: “SPL Poetry Ambassadors”.
If you would like to chat further about this opportunity, we can arrange an online call with either our Board member, Laura Fyfe, or our Head Librarian, Jill Mackintosh.
