National Poetry Day is coming!
National Poetry Day is celebrating its 25th anniversary this autumn, on Thursday 3 October. NPD’s theme this year is topical: ‘truth’.
The Scottish Poetry Library (SPL) will take the lead in Scotland in promoting the UK’s annual celebration of poetry and poets. In addition to the theme of ‘truth’, the SPL will also be using NPD to mark the UNESCO Year of Indigenous Languages. The SPL is marking the occasion in several ways.
Six poems that illustrate the theme of ‘truth’ have been turned into poem-postcards. In collaboration with Literature Wales and the Forward Arts Foundation, the poems are in Gaelic, Scots, Welsh, Cornish, Manx and English and are available from public and selected school libraries in Scotland for free. The poems chosen include work by Anne Frater, William Soutar, Robert Corteen Carswell, Donald R. Rawe, Gruffudd Owen and Casia Wiliam. We also provide recordings and materials for schools and libraries to download and use. You can see the postcards below the blog.
From October 2, NPD Ambassador Sally Crabtree will transform the SPL into a ‘Sweetshop of Words’ where visitors are invited to come and share memories of sweets and sweetshops past and present, make your own conceptual confectionary, along with art wrappers, and add your ‘truths’ to a growing PinARTa.
On October 3, 7pm, the SPL is hosting a free event with two NPD Ambassadors Dean Atta and Sally Crabtree, entitled GOBstopper, a mix of poetry, bingo, sweetshop memories and a PinARTa to smash. Reserve a ticket here.
National Poetry Day is an annual celebration that inspires people throughout the UK to enjoy, discover and share poems. NPD was founded in 1994 by the charity Forward Arts Foundation, whose mission is to promote excellence in poetry and increase its audience. NPD enjoys the support of the BBC, Arts Council England, the Royal Mail and leading literary and cultural organisations, alongside booksellers, publishers, libraries and schools. Everyone is invited to join in, whether by organising events, displays, competitions or by simply posting favourite lines of poetry on social media using #nationalpoetryday.
We are the lead agency in Scotland for National Poetry Day. From 1999, National Poetry Day has been themed by Forward Arts Foundation; this year’s theme of ‘truth’ seemed especially pertinent for inspiration. It is also the UNESCO Year of Indigenous Languages so we teamed up with Forward Foundation/National Poetry Day and Literature Wales to bring you poems in Manx, Cornish, Welsh, Scots, and Gaelic, as well as English.
