Can you help us raise funds for a really worthwhile cause?
Lesley Morrison, a GP in the Borders, has approached us with the wonderful idea of creating a small anthology of poems to give to every young doctor graduating in Scotland. The book would be small enough to tuck into a pocket, and the idea is to choose a selection of poems that, as Lesley puts is, ‘nourish [the doctors’] humanity and remind them that they are not alone in their experience’.
Whether you know a young doctor at this early stage in their career, or perhaps you have been the patient who has benefited from a young doctor’s care, you’ll recognise some of the difficulties and responsibilities that they are facing – and how hard it can be at times. If you’re reading this blog, perhaps you also know how much the right poem at the right moment can comfort, question and clarify in all sorts of contexts. We hope to compile a collection of poems that will acknowledge some of those difficulties and strengths, and help young doctors feel that they are not alone in their experiences: another way of talking about the human skills they have to learn and maintain for the sake of both their patients and themselves, when they must still seem positive and confident and, as Lesley says, can be ’at risk of being overwhelmed by vast amount of protocols and clinical data’.
Lesley’s friend and colleague Dr Pat Manson was a doctor who cared deeply about the training of young doctors as well as the wellbeing of his patients. Dr Manson died last year, and his widow and Lesley feel that this small pocket anthology would be a great way to help remember the support he gave to medical training. Dr Manson’s family have therefore started the fundraising by making a large donation. The Scottish Poetry Library is giving our time and help for free. The remaining costs – things like copyright permissions, design and printing – we’re looking to raise through donations.
