'Being a doctor is a privilege; it is also very demanding and can be stressful, and to be able to look after others, we need to look after ourselves. We offer you this little book of poetry, Tools of the Trade, as a friend to provide inspiration, comfort and support in your work.'

Tools of the Trade includes poems by poet-doctors Gael Turnbull, Glenn Colquhoun, Iain Bamforth and Martin MacIntyre amongst a powerful selection chosen by an editorial group representing doctors and poetry readers. Each year, all graduates from Scotland's medical schools are gifted a copy of this book. The second edition will be distributed to graduating doctors in 2016, 2017 and 2018, and we have a small proportion of the print-run for sale to help with fundraising.

If you would like to support the development of this project, please add a donation to your purchase.

The 2nd edition of Tools of the Trade is edited by Dr John Gillies GP, Dr Lesley Morrison GP, Revd Ali Newell, Lilias Fraser and Kate Hendry. We are grateful for the generous support of the Royal College of General Practitioners (Scotland) and The Medical and Dental Defence Union of Scotland. You can read more about the project in this information sheet.

You can also read many, though not all, of the poems online.
