Reading Hölderlin on Orkney
As to the origins of this poem, just before going to Orkney in 1995, I'd acquired a copy of Richard Sieburth's wonderful Princeton paperback of Hölderlin's Hymns and Fragments. I knew I'd be spending a few days on Hoy and would have to watch the weight of my baggage. So a dense bilingual poetry book seemed just the thing. The poem began to be written when I found myself writing down snippets in German and English.
