Mariscat Press

Mariscat Press was founded in 1982 by Kevin McCarra and Hamish Whyte, initially to publish David Neilson's Glaswegian translations of Catullus.

The publishing bug struck and the press went on to produce around 60 titles over the next 30 years. Since 1997 it has been run by Hamish Whyte and since 2004 has been based in Edinburgh, publishing mainly poetry pamphlets.

It tries to follow the watchwords of Francis Maynell of the Nonesuch Press: 'variety, flexibility, impulse'. The aim is to publish interesting poetry - interesting in terms of subject matter, emotional impact and use of language - and in affordable editions, with attention paid to presentation.

Mariscat Press has had a particularly close relationship with Edwin Morgan (key works include Sonnets from Scotland, 1984) and Gael Turnbull (For Whose Delight, 1985).
