Accession to the lairdship of Hawthornden Castle at the age of twenty-four allowed William Drummond to give up the study of law and devote himself to the collection and study of literature and the writing of poetry. He published several   books of poetry in his lifetime, and maintained friendships with literary figures of the day, including Ben Jonson. 500 volumes from his substantial collection were gifted to the University of Edinburgh.
