Born in Edinburgh, Ruthven Todd was educated at Fettes College and Edinburgh College of Art. He worked as a farm labourer on Mull, and then in Edinburgh, London, and the USA as a journalist and publisher, but is best known as a poet and writer of children’s books. He left Scotland in 1931, but the poetry that returns to his Scottish roots is considered to be his most straightforward and best.
