R. D. Laing was born in Glasgow in 1927. He studied medicine and became an innovative psychiatrist. His Wisdom, Madness, and Folly: The Making of a Psychiatrist (1985) tells his life story. His poetry publications include Knots (1970), and Sonnets (1979).
