Alan Bold was born in Edinburgh and educated at the University of Edinburgh, where he first encountered Hugh MacDiarmid in 1962. He was a poet, literary critic and editor, best known for his award-winning biography of MacDiarmid. He published several volumes of poetry, including In This Corner: Selected Poems 1963-1983 (Macdonald, 1983).
