Behind the scenes at the Scottish Poetry Library

The Thursday Post: The Poetry Book Society

If you’re unaware of the work of the Poetry Book Society, now is the time to find out more. Founded in 1953 by no less a person than T.S. Eliot, with a little help from his friends, PBS is a poetry one-stop shop, providing readers with news, reviews and discounts. Each quarter, the PBS selects a new collection to be its featured title plus a number of other recommendations for readers.

The PBS recently contacted us as part of a drive to encourage Scottish publishers to submit new titles for their Spring Book and Summer Pamphlet Selections. This is a great opportunity to promote poetry titles to a wider audience. Publishers, if you're interested, visit the PBS Submittable page for further information.

The Autumn selections this year inspire a patriotic tingle with the inclusion of Douglas Dunn’s The Noise of a Fly (with many of the poems featured in that collection first appearing in the SPL and Saltire Society’s pamphlet Second Wind). The recommendations also include Mancunia by Michael Symmons Roberts (we recorded a podcast with Roberts in 2012), The Tragic Death of Eleanor Marx by Tara Bergin, and The Darkness of Snow by Frank Ormsby. Ormsby gave a great reading, here, at the SPL, in January, 2016, while, Pascale Petit, the author of Mama Amazonica, the Autumn Choice, read at the SPL in 2015.

To join the PBS, simply visit their website. Full Members receive four books a year for £55 – including the quarterly PBS Choice book and Bulletin magazine, containing reviews and unique interviews.
